CACMS Public Consultation 2026 Update

Update on Major Proposed Change to Standard 2 for Accreditation of Medical Education Programs Leading to the M.D. Degree

As part of its commitment to continuous quality improvement in undergraduate medical education, the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) recently held a public consultation regarding proposed substantive changes to Element 2.2. The consultation period was open from February 10 to August 10, 2026, and included a public hearing on April 18, 2026.

We are grateful to all individuals, groups and organizations who contributed feedback through written submissions and participation in the hearing. Your input is invaluable to the process of strengthening the CACMS Standards and Elements and to help shape the future of medical education in Canada.

Next steps:

  • The CACMS Standards Subcommittee (SSC) will review all feedback received.
  • Recommended revisions will be presented to CACMS for discussion and decision-making in accordance with the CACMS Rules of Procedure.
  • Technical/editorial changes to Standard 2, which have already been approved, will be integrated into the documents for use beginning in the 2028–2029 academic year.
  • Substantive changes to Element 2.2 will be considered for final adoption at an upcoming CACMS Committee meeting.

The CACMS remains committed to transparency and ongoing dialogue with interested parties as part of its quality improvement process.
